Inside Neumann Mics

The youtube clip shows a Neumann U87 being machined and assembled. Well worth a watch.
Also, there are some great internal shots of vintage Neumann tube microphones over at Jogi’s. The descriptions are in German but there is some good information there. Microphones studied include Neumann U47 and CMV3, and the East German (now Gefell) UM57 and CMV563.

Another great website with lots of microphone information and internal photos is Saturn Sound.
This little youtube clip comes from ‘How it’s made’, a US TV series that shows how things are made. This episode sows the assembly of a Neumann U87 microphone, including machining the grill, making the capsule backplate, and tensioning and the diaphragm. It makes it look so easy, but then they have been making mics for more than 60 years.
You can skip the first 30 seconds if you like!
